what are the causes and treatments of Premature ejaculation?

what is Premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation occurs when a man ejaculates sooner during sexual intercourse than he or his partner would like.

Premature ejaculation is a common sexual complaint.

Estimates vary, but as many as 2 out of 5 men say they experience this problem at some time.

Ejaculation is the expulsion of semen from the body. Premature ejaculation (PE) is when ejaculation happens sooner than a man or his partner would like during sex.

Occasional PE is also known as rapid ejaculation, premature climax or early ejaculation. PE might not be a cause for worry, but it can be frustrating if it makes sex less enjoyable and impacts relationships.

If it happens often and causes problems, your health care provider can help.

TWO PHASES OF EJACULATION

Phase 1: Emission

Emission is when sperm moves from the testicles to the prostate and mixes with seminal fluid to make semen.

The vasa deferentia are tubes that help move the sperm from the testicles through the prostate to the base of the penis. (When you are talking about just 1 of these tubes, it is called a vas deferens).

Phase 2: Expulsion

Expulsion is when the muscles at the base of the penis contract. This forces semen out of the penis.

Mostly, ejaculation and orgasm (climax) happen at the same time. Some men climax without ejaculating. In most cases, erections go away after this step.

Premature Ejaculation Causes and Risk Factors

The cause is not really known. But your brain chemistry could be at least partly the reason. Men who have low levels of the chemical serotonin in their brains tend to take a shorter time to ejaculate, there are Emotional and physical causes of premature ejaculation, read below.

Emotional causes of PE:

  • Stress

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Guilt

  • Relationship problems

  • Lack of confidence or poor body image

  • Concern over your sexual performance

  • Negative feelings about the idea of sex (sexual repression)

Some physical causes of PE:

  • Unusual hormone levels

  • Irregular levels of neurotransmitters (an imbalance of the chemicals in your brain that pass messages or impulses to the rest of your body)

  • Inflammation or an infection in your prostate or urethra (the tube that runs from your bladder and sends pee out of body)

  • Genetic traits you inherit from your parents

Treatment of premature ejaculation

If your premature ejaculation is caused by a physical condition, treating the underlying condition should help. A GP can suggest possible treatment options.

Treating premature ejaculation caused by psychological factors can be more challenging. But most men who persevere with treatment find the problem resolves.

Self-help

There are a number of self-help techniques you can try before getting medical help.

These include:

  • masturbating 1 to 2 hours before having sex
  • using a thick condom to help decrease sensation
  • taking a deep breath to briefly shut down the ejaculatory reflex (an automatic reflex of the body, during which you ejaculate)
  • having sex with your partner on top (to allow them to pull away when you’re close to ejaculating)
  • taking breaks during sex and distracting yourself by thinking about something completely different
  • The start-and-stop method: This aims to improve a man’s control over ejaculation. Either the man or his partner stops sexual stimulation at the point when he feels he is about to have an orgasm, and they resume once the sensation of impending orgasm has subsided.
  • The squeeze method: This is similar, but the man gently squeezes the end of his penis, or his partner does this for him, for 30 seconds before restarting stimulation.

Practice is important, and if the problem continues, it may be worth talking to a doctor.

If you’re in a long-term relationship, you may benefit from having couples therapy.

You’ll be encouraged to explore issues that may be affecting your relationship and be given advice on how to resolve them. You may also be shown techniques that can help you “unlearn” the habit of premature ejaculation.
